BARF for two Bullies

I was lucky enough to find a supplier of Dogmatters in Gonubie, so stocked up to the hilt before we left East London, bound for Port Alfred, however, John decided we need to keep our Dogmatters in case we are not able to find more for a while and attempt at making our own BARF. I have been resisting the making of, for a while now and finding all the excuses under the sun, didn’t help as John marched us both into the first butcher in Port Alfred to see if she could assist.  I explained my requirements but she really didn’t seem at all interested in assisting us…my heart sank and my confidence in sourcing and making took a dive.  What she did have was an abundance of intestines, tripe and offal in packets which John insisted our dogs would just love….hmmmm……I wasn’t so sure about this.  The lady butcher also had 1kg packs of chicken necks, frozen, which I knew they would like….so deciding to split our decision half/half we walked out with packets of bits and bobs as well as frozen chicken necks.   That evening I made John cut up the offal cause it smelt bad, yuk, what was I feeding our poor dogs.   Mixing in a raw carrott grated, some apple grated and a little steam broccoli, our dogs could not help but salivate and levitate waiting for John to process their supper.  He was so right, they just LOVED their packet of intestines, etc, etc……I was so wrong……..

Next day armed with the local rag mag, I came across another butcher in Beavers Complex, just outside Port Alfred, run by the Smuts family.  I called to first see if I was going to be supported, or not.  A really super duper chap by the name of Andre Smuts (Herman’s son) listened attentively to my request and politely told me he could definitely assit.  So, that afternoon John and a very gleeful me, paid Andre and Herman a visit.   I took my own plastic bags and asked if they could weigh the bags into 700gram packs, for easy freezing.  No problem….wow what a pleasure.   We left them after being shown what sort of bits went into the mincing process of our dog food…….I was ecstatic….next day round 4ish all was packed and ready for collection.    Thank you Andre and Herman, you have restored my confidence in small town butchers.

Cintsa Beach Walk

It was another lazy Saturday afternoon in Cintsa. Tina was indulging in a siesta so I decided to take the dogs for a leisurely beach walk. One of the most appealing things about Cintsa is the pristine sandy beach that follows the curve of the bay for miles. Tina and I had noticed an astonishing […]
